&
Ward Sanders - Howling Fantods: a Tribute to David Foster Wallace
Hooks-Epstein Galleries is proud to open the 2015-2016 Houston Art Season with two solo exhibitions featuring collage on canvas by Jacqueline Dee Parker and assemblage by Ward Sanders. The exhibition will open Saturday, September 12, 2015, with a reception for the artists from 5:00PM-7:00PM.
Jacqueline Dee Parker’s, Pole Dancing on the Axis Mundi, is inspired by the imagined point-or line-around which the world revolves. Parker states, “I’m drawn to this idea of order in the metaphysical underpinnings of the universe. As I work, I think about the horizontal, vertical, and other directional forces that shape human experience and orchestrate paths of movement and pursuit. Life is a series of balancing acts, and juggling the balls of time often becomes a dance. My work is accompanied by related poems” Her collage materials include papers from antique books, sheet music, and other ephemera, fragments that offer the bricks and mortar for a visceral construction of psychic space.
A mixed media painter and a poet, Jacqueline Dee Parker's work is inspired by the correspondence between these art forms. She views collage as a mode of perception, and finds that it facilitates he exploration of language, history, and ephemera. She received her BA from Sarah Lawrence College and her MFA in Creative Writing/Painting and Drawing from Louisiana State University. She has served as an instructor at Louisiana State University since 1993, and taught in the Department of English before joining the School of Art in 2003. She currently resides in Baton Rouge, LA.
In Howling Fantods: a Tribute to David Foster Wallace, Ward Sanders is paying tribute to the rare genius and inspiration of author, David Foster Wallace. Sanders states, “I have been especially entranced by his practice of finding beauty in obscure information, pointless lists, fragmented description, mundane detail and odd footnotes. His nightmarish (but often darkly hilarious) images from American culture are panoramas of contemporary dystopia.” Although in the writings of David Foster Wallace, themes of boredom and passive entertainment might seem unlikely candidates for visual inspiration, Wallace provides a goldmine for the visual artist.
Ward Sanders constructs boxes of different sizes, and place instruments and objects within them. He received his BS in Biology from Sul Ross University in Alpine, TX and did post graduate studies at the University of Arizona. He was a high school educator in biology and art for 33 years in Houston, Lytle, and San Antonio. He currently resides in Lytle, TX
The exhibitions will continue through October 17, 2015.
